Bio

Jerry Monk.

My entire family sang. My Dad played uke and harmonica and my Mom played Hawaiian guitar. I

started singing in my church choir at about age 9 and began playing saxophone and ukulele around that same time. My Dad bought an acoustic guitar when I was 13 and my first electric guitar about a year later. My brother- in- law Bob Frie played guitar and sang in several area country bands in clubs and on the radio in Trenton. He really helped me by letting me play rhythm to his leads and beautiful singing.

Solo dates at coffee houses and band gigs began while in high school. I was also lucky enough to have acted and sung in a few musical comedies in school and after. Fun stuff. In 1971 the band I was in (Three Penney Opera) added two excellent guitarists. I wisely began playing bass.

I’ve played frat parties, bars, restaurants, military bases, firehouses, Elks Clubs, libraries, private parties, weddings... anywhere else that wanted a band, duo, trio or soloist.

I’ve had the good fortune to have opened for Gil Scot Heron’s band, Shirley & Company, Carol Douglas, Johnny Winter, Marshal Tucker, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, The Yardbirds, Delbert McClinton and Blues Traveler.

Currently I’m performing solo or in a duo with my son John Monk (bassist for Asylum Choir) or with longtime friend (and incredible guitarist) Joe Kramer.

From the time I started I’ve tried to perform some songs that most solo artists don’t play. I also always

ask for requests. If I don’t know them I do my best to learn them.
